@JBlitz Are you saying Red was also interrogating Tom when he was in the boat? I always thought Red knew Liz had Tom & I suppose the idea that Red wouldn’t figure out where Tom was and pay off the guard for access to him strains credulity. But Red seemed pretty shocked by the mess in the boat… Sometimes I feel like the writers throw in something gratuitous for shock value and figure they’ll deal with it later….
Killing off Alda and Stormare in one episode seems wasteful of talent. Are there that many more high quality actors out there willing to take bit parts?
@Brandon @Casey & others: I am having trouble understanding why Red and Tom need to have had an earlier friendly relationship or any “business” relationship at all before Tom gets shot by Liz. Wouldn’t Tom have recognized Red on the bench at the hospital? And wouldn’t he have just told Berlin whatever he knew about Red from knowing him before? I thought Red became suspicious of Tom because he found out Tom was getting forged passports from the same forger he used in Warsaw (1:18 Milton Bobbitt).
I agree Red knew very early on that Liz did not kill Tom – probably when he didn’t hear an additional gunshot, and he could have been in touch with him somehow early in his captivity — maybe that’s why the guard didn’t like her showing up at odd hours. It seems Red commented on Liz’s ‘special source’ about once an episode: he was very disappointed by her reluctance to confide in him. She almost did – and probably wishes she had.
The rest of your theory I agree with, @Brandon. Red thought Tom might be useful & and voilá he was, but now Red wants him gone! & probably gave him $$$ & new IDs, plane tickets. Except I don’t think Tom will leave town before he has a good old-fashioned stag-fight with Ressler. If would feel a bit p.o.’d at the writers if they keep Tom around. He already told her once he just felt “pity,” not love, for her. He held a gun to her head, for heaven’s sake! It’s the very model of domestic abuse. She deserves better. Speaking of which…

P.S. I think the Mr Kaplan mention is a red herring: he could have picked that up from Liz, Red, Jolene, surveillance. The writers can easily throw in some glib explanation for that; but a long-term relation w Red raises tons of complications.
