๐Ÿ”ด Scribblings Jul-Sep 2015

This is where I post my thoughts and reblog stuff from other sites I find interesting or topical, mostly topics from Twitter, Tumblr and blogs. Mostly discussion in Scribblings in the past has tended to be about the story, characters, their relationships, the timeline plus various controversies in the fandom. I also keep a record of technical issues here. โ€“ Lightly edited. Reverse chronological.

Final Comments on “Review: Image Editing Apps”
July 7, 2015
I looked at around 60 image processing apps for a basic set I could use for working with photos (mostly low-light screenshots) for Twitter and for this blog. I work on an iPad mini and have a large collection of 24,000 pics, about half of which are about The Blacklist (yeah, I know). So my comments are relevant mostly to iPad and Apple users. This assumes starting with iOS as the operating system and iPhoto as the basic image storage and editing app. Unfortunately, iPhoto does not do everything.(1)
โ‹™ 7/31/2015: I’m going to be updating this in a few weeks, after I’ve had more time with the apps. I’ve added 10 or so new apps, plus I’m excited about some of the unique capabilities I didn’t know we’re even possible. Often it seems one app will do something simply a lot better or more intuitively. So, more later…
โ‹™ 9/27/2015. So, after a couple months and under increasing pressure, I find my choices are being driven by how closely an app works with the native Photo app on my iPad. That is a feature of Snapseed. But Snapseed has one feature everyone needs: the ability to zone in on a part of a photo and easily adjust the brightness, contrast and saturation. For this, I’d say it’s indispensable. Also closely integrated with Photos is an app called Afterlight. I use this to sharpen details as Photos does not have a sharpen function, and also to extend the ability to adjust brightness beyond what Photos provides (because I start with screenshots most of my photos are dark to begin with).

Although I maintain that Big Blue’s blur function is the very best, Big Blue has a tendency to crash under the weight of my large number of photos and to mix up their order when I try to select them โ€“ very annoying. So at times, I will use Aviary instead, if really detailed work is not involved. Another must-have app in my view is Pixelmator, for one reason: it has a “smart” function which allows you to remove objects by erasing them. There are stand-alone apps that don’t do this half as well. I still show it to people to impress them. The function is hard (counter-intuitive, in fact) to find. You do not select “Paint and Erase” but instead, “Retouch.” Then select “Repair.” You get a virtual eraser whose width can be adjusted. By “smart,” I mean if you’re erasing something against a complex background, it attempts to fill in the complex background. It even filled on hair on a bald guy’s head for me.

For collages, I like PhotoWallHD because it is totally freeform and very sleek and powerful. It retains the high-resolution I get from my iPad as I edit which allows for a lot of control over details. Then when I’m done, I typically reduce the res before loading to my blog. Finally, this is just a feature I like, โ€“ I like being able to add shine to eyes with ReLook.

I continue to play with many of the tools I got. There are tons of apps that do the various lighting adjustments perfectly well, but as I said, the iPad native app is there so I use it. I use add-ons (stickers, text, sparkles, filters) very rarely. I have not found anything that allows you to add/paint natural-looking colors to photos, but it could be out there and I just have not found it. 9/30/2015: oops, I take that back. Though I still haven’t mastered it, PicsArt appears to be what I was looking for.

Oh yes โ€“ I found an app for labeling photos called Focal Point. However, it rests on top of Apple’s Photos and can get out of synch. But so far it’s the only practical way I’ve found to add captions to my photos while retaining the quality of the photo. I don’t understand why Apple does not provide this capability.

So those are my experiences and suggestions. For a few dollars โ€“ and a lot of practice time โ€“ I can now salvage or perfect just about any photo I encounter, which is what I set out to be able to do. I hope this was helpful to you.

POLL HACKED: Description of Recovery Process

9/30/2015 (1pm CT)

Someone hacked the poll I set up asking about who Liz “should hook up with.” Based on a spike in activity at 8am Sunday, I assume it was then that someone awarded about 100 votes to Ressler โž” almost three times as many votes as he had gotten in the previous two weeks (lol?). They likely did this by circumventing the security which was based on cookies alone. This is fairly easy to do. I’ve since increased the security to include IP addresses. When I saw this problem later in the morning, I took that poll down (id 9077831) and started a new one (id 90978b77).
The last good numbers I remembered were from Saturday night. Red was getting just under 55%. I wanted to wait until the poll passed 200 and I remember it was at 180. I also have a tweet Robert_Blacklister (@vegasdude–) sent around then from then indicating that Red had 55%. Red had been at about 55% for a couple of days. With the detail I retrieved today on Tom and the “other” categories, Ressler’s actual totals can be determined. I have started the poll again with more security and the results are following the original pattern.
99 55% Red [ recalled โ€“ two sources ]
38 21% Res [ derived ]
29 16% Tom โž” from the detailed data
15 8% Misc โž” from the detailed data
180 100%
55% of 180 is 99, so that works. From the detailed results, I got the total for Tom (29 or about 16%) and for the “other” categories (“someone else,” “no one” and “don’t know”). This total was 15 or 8% of 180. So that leaves about 36% to be split between Tom and Ressler and we know Tom is 16%, leaving about 20% or 21% for Ressler. Twenty-one percent of 180 is 38. Small amounts of rounding are involved.
Hits to my site come largely from search engines. Only a total of about 10% come from Tumblr, Twitter, Facebook and blogs combined. There’s no reason to think it would be skewed by anyone’s beliefs about my site. I left notes on the main FB BL fan site and at IMDb in addition to Twitter simply stating there was a poll and saying “please vote.” Of course there is no way I can tell anything about the demographics of who votes.

My take on:

BlacklistPodcast/GoldenSpiralMedia (9/24/2015): Interview with @Daniel_Knauf, Co-Exec Producer & Writer On The Blacklist http://bit.ly/1PzY4GG

This link brings up a player that will play even if you leave the page: http://bit.ly/1Kz8zsv

The interview with Daniel Knauf runs for almost two hours and almost gave me vertigo in Daniel Knauf’s descriptions of how arbitrary and serendipitous the creative process can be. Daniel Knauf is a writer and co-executive producer of The Blacklist. He describes the highly charged and time-pressured process in which the show is produced, focusing on the writing and touching on conflict between creativity and continuity. Two forces seem to counter-balance the creative exuberance: Jon Bokenkamp and John Eisendrath’s structural scaffolding and sense of the end-game, and James Spader’s close working relationship with the writers to give his character (and the others) substance, consistency and coherence. Knauf takes on some controversies, such as the development of Tom’s and Liz’s characters in Season 2.

I totally agreed with the discussion of the silliness and irrelevance of the Emmys and of just how incredibly good The Blacklist is. I don’t watch enough TV drama to know, but I wonder: Is this a genre that’s being defined just now? Is it being overlooked for that reason? I loved Knauf’s theory that the people who voted on the Emmys don’t watch television โ€“ instead going with what their grandkids tell them is cool (or hot, โ€“ whatever). Are there examples of shows that have been or are doing this better?

I must confess I have only binge-watched series prior to this. I also have had no sense of loyalty to series unless I liked their direction โ€“ even if I’d watched up to 4 seasons (Downton Abby). I abandoned Mad Men (after 3 seasons), Game of Thrones (3 seasons), Breaking Bad (1 season), and House of Cards (1 season โ€“ but I tried three times!) On the other hand I’ve watched The Sopranos three times, Rome twice, and I love Vikings and Homeland. I loved a mini-series Titanic Blood and Steel (4 or 5 times) and can’t tell you how many times I watched the BBC’s Pride and Prejudice w Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle (Madeline Pratt!)

Anyway, I am no expert, just have a certain background. I am surprised at how much the team and “pitch”-ing dynamics DK has described about how TBL works is similar to that in organizations I’ve worked. We tend to think of artists as solitary geniuses โ€“ and some are. But any kind of scale requires teamwork and specialization โ€“ with creativity woven throughout the entire fabric of a project, not dictated by a single, solitary genius. (Though this happens too.)

I learned a lot from this interview, both about The Blacklist and about how film and TV shows are written and produced. An hour and fifty minutes sounds like a lot of time, but it just flies by. The player (which hopefully works for you) lets you play it in the background. The upshot: Thoroughly engrossing and blindingly enlightening, as well as unsettling and โ€“ yes indeed โ€“ vertigo-producing.

Lots of progress. Searches should work much better. ALL scripts are done. I have style changes planned and tested for S3. I’m feeling so good, I’m just going to play with doing slideshows of some of my favorite scenes. Slideshows and collages seem to be my favorite visuals. Both save on WordPress storage. But they also seem the best way to complement the writing. Think of then as s-l-o-o-o-o-w motion GIFs.(lol?)

There was a kurfluffle in the fandom yesterday when D Knauf tweeted something like ‘who wants to see a pudgy middle-aged man with a young woman?’The explanation, which I accept, was that this didn’t refer to Lizzington at all but was joking between D Knauf and a woman joking about themselves, D being the ‘pudgy middle aged-man.’ Oy vey! The cacophony! D was not happy with the push-back and young woman was devastated that what was supposed to have been a DM was Tweeted instead.

But this may have been the best reprise:

My comment: Very dark indeed. It is hard to leave kudos for this (I don’t want it to end like this โ€ฆ) but I did because it is so powerful. The last sentence sent chills down my back and may give me nightmares. And, besides, who knows?

I decided to use ๎Š instead of โ— in the titles and menus. I think it looks better and is more optimistic. I’ll use โ— for “alarm.”

When I wrote anything about Berlin’s daughter, for a long time I used Zoรซ instead of Zoe, even in the scripts. This was my mistake. Though I will use Zoe going forward, it will continue to be Zoรซ in some documents. So you have to search for both. I realize almost no one will see this note. I apologize for that too!

I cleaned up the Search from the Internet. I love it! It should make it a lot easier to use going forward.

I am down to the last 5 scripts of Season 1. I wasn’t going to do them as the episodes are my least favorite, but when the Premiere date got pushed back a week, I figured it was a sign from God โ€“ assuming God is the NBC Chair. (Greenblatt)?

LizzieB90 wrote on 8/3/2015 at 1:30 am CDT

Special Symbols
For new content, I’ve started putting a red exclamation mark โ— in the title. Typically, this means within the last week, for instance, it would mean there’s a new review or article added. For fanfics (in “Clues”) I use a tulip ๐ŸŒท to mean within the last month and a sun ๎Š to mean “in 2015.”

I announced the results of the poll on the Liz/Red relationship in two Tweets today.

๐Ÿฃ Poll: Is Red Liz’s father? No 49% Yes 45% wp.me/pDKwi-1h9 135 votes @Daniel_Knauf @BrandonBSonnier @BrandonMargolis #TheBlacklist

๐Ÿฃ A Blacklist Support Group poll in March (104 votes) found 50% saying Red is Liz’s father @Daniel_Knauf @BrandonMargolis @BrandonBSonnier

The three people tagged are writers. Despite the poll stating it would close down after a week, it didn’t and more votes have come in but the results have remained consistent at about 50% saying No, Red is not Liz’s father, 45% saying Yes, he is.

The Blacklist Support Group ran a poll in March getting 104 votes of which 52 (or 50%) said he was her father. Here’s the BLSG poll link: http://bit.ly/1MqgHO3 So, all told (tolled?), there may be a slight movement in the direction of those saying he is not her father, but it is well within the margin of error (about 9 for my poll). I have used Google to look for other polls that have asked this question. There have only been a couple others during Season 2 and they have garnered only a handful of votes.

If the creative staff wished to resolve this question in the season finale, they failed. I think the premise of the show being that nothing can be taken at face value, it may be that people are not ready to take the reveal in Liz’s flashback as determinative anymore than any other “fact.” It makes it easy to stay with one’s inclinations. I wonder what TPTB will do next.

To me the question is: what human relationship can explain Red’s utter devotion to Liz? Is there another besides father or lover (love interest)? My view has been that Red was in love with Liz’s mother and it’s his devotion to her memory that explains his dedication to Liz. He feels protective of her as surrogate father but also attracted to her because she reminds him of her mother. It’s a conflicted relationship.

LizzieB90 wrote on 7/21/2015 at 4:00 am CDT

YouTube makes it possible to create slideshows from photos, I discovered, so I’m adding slideshows to the scripts using the pics in my Tweets. Otherwise I am done with the scripts for Season 2.

Blog Update

Just a note on why there hasn’t been a lot of new content appearing on this site. I have โ€“ as all blog managers know โ€“ had a lot of technical maintenance to do. I’ve never done a blog before, so it’s been a steep learning curve. I fixed a lot of bugs and did things to speed up response times. The site should look prettier.

I’ve also been learning about image editing software and how to embed YouTube videos with slideshows built from the images I get from screenshots and enhance. I’m planning to embed a slideshow for the episode in each script. Also, I’ve been setting up the “Black Sites” page as an index to The Blacklist on the Web. Except YouTube has me flummoxed: I can’t seem to find any organization โ€“ by date, number of views, even topic โ€“ to give me any idea what all is actually out there. I think I got a handle on the music playlists and crack videos, but otherwise, I am lost. Suggestions?

Later this summer, I’m planning one more long article โ€“ on Aristotle’s notion of mimesis and how it relates to mirror cells. I think it ends up showing that Jon Bokenkamp’s idea of “surprise” runs counter to the concept of catharsis. I don’t like being left hanging like he did to us at the end of The Decembrist, that led to what I thought was a lot of ‘meh’ explanations that I wonder if they’d even worked out before the winter hiatus. Why I can’t just say “I hate that!” Instead of getting into biochemistry โ€“ well, I like to tie things together from unrelated parts of my experience.

And I have to update the Deep Background section, which still has big holes in it. So, I expect this will take me through September. Oh โ€“ I forgot: I’m not sure what to do about the Season 1 scripts. I posted just the raw ones from Springfield’s but there is a woman at fanforum who has done Season 1, episodes 1-15. I tried to reach her but didn’t hear back. I suppose it would make sense for me to do episodes 16-22. So there’s that.

I try to retweet The Blacklist tweets every day or so. It’s fun to watch as people around the world are seeing episodes for the first time. WordPress tells me which countries people are accessing this blog from, so I see that reflected there also. Also, after I posted the article “What is the Cabal?” I got a surge of visitors from Russia, which was cool. Or scary. It’s just fictional TV, Comrades!

I hope you find this site useful. I love doing it. It lets me look at James Spader endlessly yet still just appear to those around me to be somewhat sane. Because I’m just doing it to learn how to blog, ya know? Lol! Enjoy the summer!

LizzieB90 on 7/12/2015 at 3:35am on “Retcon”

I had to look up “retcon,” mentioned in the excerpt below by cixsa. What a useful concept for talking about the apparent discontinuities in The Blacklist. Did everybody know this term except me? Here is Wikipedia:

Retroactive continuity, or retcon for short,[1][2] is the alteration of previously established facts in the continuity of a fictional work.[3]

There are various motivations for retconning. The changes may occur to accommodate sequels or derivative works, allowing newer authors or creators to revise the diegetic (in-story) history to include a course of events that would not have been possible in the story’s original continuity. Retcons allow for authors to reintroduce popular characters and resolve errors in chronology.

Retcons are common in pulp fiction, especially in comic books published by long-established publishers such as DC and Marvel. The long history of popular titles and the number of writers who contribute stories can often create situations that demand clarification or revision. Retcons also appear in manga, soap operas, serial dramas, movie sequels, professional wrestling angles, video games, radio series, and other forms of serial fiction.

From The Blacklist writers’ room… (Screenshot from video). Darkened for legibility.

cixsa: Today I was remembering thisโ€ฆ
what the hell happened with all of this??
what did that change??
They even came out to explain on somewhere the change of Masha Rostova by Tom Connolly at the end of season??

? Nope Iโ€™ve got nothing.

iโ€™m feeling more sure than ever that absolutely everything about S2 was a retcon that ended up undermining ALL theyโ€™d built in S1. Character stories, credibility, suspense, all of it undone by making it ~more dramatic in S2. Someone should revoke their retcon privileges tbh.

(red graduating the academy in โ€˜87 is actually impossible. this timeline is as insane as the retconned one. why are the characters i like stuck on this trainwreck disaster show?)

hideous-fish โ‹™ There are definitely a LOT of WTF moments in season 2 regarding continuity. But the one that bothers me most of all is the story about Reds family. On S1 what happened to them was a huge mistery. Not even Red knew. But in S2 it was like, ah they where just hidding, its all good! WTF?

There is something else that really bothers me and maybe you guys can help me with this. How old is Red? Because lets assume he is around 54 years old. If Liz is 31 when she was 4, Red was around 27. He was a kid! I mean he wasnโ€™t old enough to have a power possition with in the cabal or anywhere for that matter! Am I not thinking this through? I donโ€™t know how to make sense of it.

Pato1025 โ‹™ โ‹™ No, you are thinking it through just fine! it just doesnโ€™t make a lot of sense. And back when we thought Liz was 32-33 in S1 (splitting the difference between Meganโ€™s age and Lizโ€™s age in the pilot draft/shopped pilot) it was even worse bc Red would have been even younger. No matter how you try and line it up, Red would only have been 2 to 6 years out of the academy.

Whatever happened back the, he just literally/temporally/logically canโ€™t have been in charge or orchestrating anything. Maybe he didnโ€™t even have the full story, who knows. I just donโ€™t understand how he could have arranged so much for Liz as itโ€™s been implied, he couldnโ€™t have been too high ranking and then he was on the run from the law and the cabal and like 30, tops. It makes his guilt seem overblown and irrational as well. How??? Is this?? Supposed to have worked???? Twice as much is supposed to have happened than is physically possible for the 5/6 year time frame for all this.

I need it to understand it at least a little to write fic on, but by this point I just grab bits at random and go AU with it. Less self contradictory tangents that way!

No one knows when Ronald Reagan’s dementia, first diagnosed in 1994 began to affect him. All U.S. Presidents and especially one who survived an assassination attempt and was older than most, receive close medical attention. Reagan’s closest aides and doctor’s say there was no sign of dementia, but maybe they were all lying as part of some big conspiracy. Reagan is widely viewed as one of the greatest U.S. Presidents but the minority who didn’t like Reagan have been relentless in trying to diminish his legacy. Those who are too young to recall LBJ. Nixon, Ford and Carter may not have a full appreciation of Ronald Reagan, but those of us who recall that history credit Reagan with the following:

1. Ending the Cold War: The Cold War had raged since World War II and communismโ€˜s quest for world domination remained an existential threat to the United States when President Reagan took office. Reagan reversed the policy of detente and stood firm against the Soviet Union, calling it the Evil Empire and telling Mikhail Gorbachev to โ€œtear down this wallโ€ in Berlin. He was relentless in pushing his Strategic Defense Initiative and gave aid to rebels battling Soviet-backed Marxists from Nicaragua to Angola. Those efforts were critical in the ultimate collapse of the Soviet empire and essentially ended the Cold War.

2. Reaganomics: Reaganโ€™s mix of across-the-board tax cuts, deregulation, and domestic spending restraint helped fuel an economic boom that lasted two decades. Jimmy Carter told Americans that they must accept that American would never be great again. Reagan inherited a misery index (the sum of the inflation and unemployment rates) of 19.99%, and when he left office it had dropped to 9.72% Under Reaganomics, 16 million new jobs were created.

3. Peace through Strength: The military was diminished during the Carter years, but Reagan reversed that by rebuilding the armed forces. His Peace Through Strength philosophy was manifested by his reviving the B-1 bomber that Carter canceled, starting production of the MX missile, and pushing NATO to deploy Pershing missiles in West Germany. He increased defense spending by more than 40%, increased troop levels, and even got much-needed space parts into the pipeline. Those efforts ensured that America remained a military superpower.

4. Morning in America: Morning in America symbolized a new beginning for the country. Reaganโ€™s jaunty optimism and an economic boom was a much-needed tonic for a country that had experienced the malaise of the Carter years and the traumas of Watergate and Vietnam.

5. Star Wars: Reaganโ€™s Strategic Defense Initiative was derided by his opponents as being technologically unfeasible, but the mere threat of the U.S. building the system was instrumental in the Soviet Unionโ€™s collapse. The successful use of Patriot missile batteries in the first Gulf War proved the critics wrong, and the missile defense system that ensued has lessened the threat of ballistic missiles.

6.. Nuclear weapons cuts: Even as massive demonstrations were held in Europe against Reaganโ€™s hawkish stance on nuclear arms, the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) treaty he signed with Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev eliminated an entire class of nuclear weapons. He also laid the framework with Gorbachev for the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START), which reduced both countriesโ€™ arsenals of nuclear weapons.

7. Taking on unions. This is the reason many former union workers dislike Reagan. Early in his administration, members of the federal air traffic controllers union (PATCO) went on strike, violating a federal regulation. Declaring the strike a โ€œperil to national safety,โ€ Reagan gave the workers an ultimatum and ended up firing more than 11,000 of the controllers, sending a strong signal that union workers neednโ€™t be coddled

The amazing thing about these 7 points, is that “Mother Jones” and “NY Times” crowd was wrong on each point. I remember vividly that many feared that Reagan’s election would lead to nuclear war. Critics laughed at “Star Wars” – until it ended the Cold War. Having been proven so very wrong, I suppose it’s predictable that critics would keep at it long after the man is dead, but, even if Reagan was incapacitated during his entire presidency, he was an incredibly effective president. While Hollywood and NBC obviously tilt left, I’d be shocked if The Blacklist writers had the “Cabal” starting during Reagan’s presidency.

The CIA, NSA and FBI were restrained significantly in light of Church Committee findings, including:

Project Mockingbird
Physical surveillance of investigative journalist Jack Anderson, Les Whitten and Brit Hume.
Opening of mail to and from the Soviet Union from 1953 to 1973 (including letters associated with actress Jane Fonda) (project SRPOINTER/HTLINGUAL at JFK airport)
Opening of mail to and from the People’s Republic of China from 1969 to 1972 (project SRPOINTER/HTLINGUAL at JFK airport – see also Project SHAMROCK by the NSA)
MK-ULTRA mind control and LSD experiments on unwitting US citizens (including Whitey Bolger)
Assassination plots against Cuban President Fidel Castro; Congolese leader Patrice Lumumba; President Rafael Trujillo of the Dominican Republic; and Renรฉ Schneider, Commander-in-chief of the Chilean Army. All of these plots were said to be unsuccessful ones.
Surveillance of dissident groups between 1967 and 1971 (see Project RESISTANCE, Project MERRIMAC and Operation CHAOS)
Amassing of files on 9,900-plus US citizens related to the antiwar movement (see Project RESISTANCE, Project MERRIMAC and Operation CHAOS)

This is why I likely won’t be opening a discussion forum here any time soon, but just comments on a few postings. Chaos is the natural result of entropy and successful open blogs need organization and accountability. Either moderation is needed (with recruiting of moderators being a constant struggle, as at TVforum ) or a set of operating principles in needed that users self-enforce and the blog admin stands behind, Daily Kos being the best example I know. Well, here there’s just me. Working part-time. I hope my contributions here continue to be useful to you beautiful Blacklist-lovers. Until Karl/Anonymous and the his fake fan-fiction faction (of just him) got very miffed about that idea. Any of these ideas could be true. Red may be someone else or under a different identity now. With all due respect, you couldn’t be more wrong. If you need a refresher on the level of discussion that went on in this freak show when the “regulars” were here, go to to the top of this thread and read the dopey scenarios being thrown out regarding Vanessa Cruz framing Liz by killing Connolly; a second shooter from the balcony, Tom swapping guns with Liz.

I really hope these lunatics make good on their threats to move to another blacklist group. Sifting through the fan fic was getting tedious. It would be nice to have a forum dedicated to those who pay attention to the show as written instead of their fantasies involving the characters.

Based upon what I’ve observed here for the past few months, there is no solution.
When the show resumes in the fall, the regulars will return, each spouting their pet theories only to be proven wrong time and time again as a new episode rolls around. It’s basically lather, rinse, repeat with no end in sight.

@411 Iโ€™m disappointed that you have yet to identify the many clues in the most important episode to date, the Endgame episode (aka Ruslan Denisov). โ€œI was in Steven Bash’s rec room down in the basement, eating fried egg and bologna sandwich when he did it.โ€

As you may know, Steven Bash is a prominent Los Angeles lawyer turned boxing promoter. He is also . . . drum roll . . . Russian and speaks Russian fluently.

The incident occurred in a basement in 1972, was it possible to watch TV in a basement in 1972? I imagine the over the air reception would be horrible โ€“ unless the family had advanced communication equipment. Hmmmm . . .

And then there is the โ€œfried egg and bologna sandwichโ€ a regional specialty basically unknown outside the south and Midwest. Fried bologna is considered by some to be โ€œpoor peopleโ€ food, but that doesnโ€™t square with the ability to watch TV is a basement rec room.

Since the recent theme here seems to be relationship (aka โ€œshipsโ€) I thought Iโ€™d mention one that has me baffled. I speak, of course, of the relationship triangle between Jerry Minkie, his (yet unnamed) wife and the (yet unnamed) uber driver Subaru. So many loose ends to tie up here:

First, the elephant in the room: Subaru? Uber? Hmmpf. I think we are talking UberX, no?
Why have the names of Minkieโ€™s wife and the Uber driver been withheld from us? The writers do everything for a reason, so I presume the names would give away too much. Minkie seems vaguely Russian to me, so there might be something then.
Why was Jerry Minkie so anxious to located his wife after she ran off with the Uber driver? To what extent was Red involved? What happened after Glenn located Jerryโ€™s wife.
I doubt weโ€™ll see all these mysteries solved in season 3, but we should be on the lookout for clues.

We arenโ€™t all Karl, but we all are members of Karlโ€™s Kabal taking direction from Karl.

When those responsible for producing The Blacklist became aware (through persistent twitter reports from @LizzieB90) that the sleuths on this WSJ Blog were unraveling all of mysteries of the show, they were forced to abandon numerous story lines. To prevent a repeat they retained the Kabal to sow confusion on this message board and discredit some of the most perceptive regulars. Needless to say, Karlโ€™s fingerprints are all over the recent threads. As an alert Anon notes, Karl and others in the Kabal are apt to use words such as โ€œanalysisโ€ and โ€œfan ficโ€ and will never refer directly to the law of parsimony, but will instead use โ€œOccamโ€™s razorโ€ and make other references to โ€œlogical discourseโ€ to try to intimidate others. Anonymous 750 pm, you are probably right. Sigh. He/she reminds me of this person who used to post all day long on the site of another show I used to watch. He did it for years until everyone left and the show went off. He must have had 30-40 names. Lizzie already lists 3 pr 4 on her blog, and has used I don’t know how many here. I’ve seen the exact same posts in other places. “Lizzie” has already listed off a couple names besides the others he/she uses here that are on IMDB. Sigh. Karl, almond, a bunch of Anons, and I think there are more. How many times did he post and post back to himself today? And yesterday.

What’s funny is the “analysis” he/she gives is the most fan fiction oriented stuff I’ve read so far. Someone already said it. It’s all speculation. His is no more analytical than most.

@Military Brat: That was interesting, what you shared about your knowledge. I would think you’re right, that the show isn’t going to be 100% accurate on that. That kind of thing gets fumbled a little in TV and movies. Thank you for supplying correct information,

The humorous thing is that those offended by analysis based on what is in the show as opposed to what is still possible seem to attribute all thoughtful analysis to one person. In fact, there are more of us out there than they realize. I’ve seen some excellent analysis on YouTube and occasionally some other sites. Then there is the dry wit that appears from time to time. There is enough good here to warrant sifting through the “sea of fan fiction.”

Good morning, Karl! You use “fan fic” over and over and you say you must have touched a nerve over and over. If you don’t like Linda’s idea, move on. Her idea is very sound. Linda’s idea is no more fan fic than yours. Why do you change your name so much if you’re so happy with your idea? You change your name over and over and try to pretend several people are fans of your theory. There’s nothing wrong with your theory, and there’s nothing wrong with Linda’s. You’re the one that gets all upset when someone differ from you.

@Linda B it’s true that not everything has to be complicated, but everything is written into the script for a reason. There is no adlibbing on the show, so the writers put it there for a reason. Either a clue or a false clue, but someone wrote it into the script for a reason. I beg to differ as to the closing scenes, but if you’ve got examples of episodes that ended without some sort of clue or reveal I’d be interested.

For the haters and name callers, you make yourself very small when you resort to school yard bullying to drive away those who don’t agree with you. What is the point of commenting if you get offended when others comment on your comment? I make a comment about the implications of another’s comment and I’m accused of being a troll, Karl, 50 other people and, of course, a jerk and instructed to move on. I guess I touched a nerve, but, if I did, it was only by illuminating points overlooked in LB’s supposedly simple explanation. Now Linda has responded to me with some fan fic to show that anything is possible, which pretty much shows that things aren’t quite so simple on the show, but everything is possible in the fan fic world.

Unfortunately, the vast majority of opinions and speculations generated are neither relevant nor useful, but will undoubtedly continue to proliferate at a prodigious rate.
