🔴 Script 5:21 Lawrence Dane Devlin (№ 26)

Brief: As Dickens might have said, ‘Ian Garvey is dead as a door-mail.’ So is Red’s ex, Naomi Hyland. Red asked Lilly (Red’s daughter, born Jennifer, who now goes by the name Lillian May Roth) to take him to see Naomi. Lilly said she first had some questions for Red, particularly, why he abandoned her and her mother on Christmas Eve in 1990. Red replied that he had had to cut ties to keep his enemies away from them.

Red: In 1990, the KGB and the CIA had almost nothing in common except the mutual determination to hunt down one individual.
Lilly: You.
Red: Being a fugitive from American law enforcement is a lot easier than being a fugitive from the two most powerful nations on Earth. And anyone close to a target of theirs becomes a target themselves.

The reason both the KGB And CIA were hunting him, Red said, was that he had discovered The Cabal, the insidious international secret organization he had “stumbled across and tried to destroy. To prevent that, they tried to destroy me.”

After their discussion, Lilly took Red to see her mother – in a cemetery. Naomi was shot and killed leaving her apartment in 2017. Lilly asked Red to never contact her again. Red agreed.

Red had hoped Naomi might be able to help him locate the duffel bag containing a skeleton that he is desperately trying to locate before Liz does. At least half a dozen people have already died over this pursuit, including Tom, Liz’s husband. Red’s remaining lead is an associate of Ian Garvey’s, a young man named Judson, who has told Red that Garvey took the duffel bag on a flight to Costa Rica and came back without it. Red and Dembe were about to fly in Red’s jet to Costa Rica when Liz showed up. She quickly surmised the reason behind the planned trip. But she also has an urgent reason for intervening – Samar has been abducted and Red’s help is deemed critical to locating her.

Samar: Put your hands up.
[ Devlin knocks Samar’s gun away. They⚡️fight ⚡️ ] [ GRUNTING ] [ Samar is overcome and stuffed into the back of a van with Maybelle ]

[ At the cult compound of Nicholas T Moore, from which Maybelle had escaped ]
Devlin: Delivered as promised.
[ Nicholas sees Samar lying unconscious in the back of the van ]
Moore: Who’s she?
Devlin: Don’t you worry about her. You contracted for the girl. I’ll take care of this one.

[ Aram approaches the main house of the cult compound ]
Kit: You heard Mr Moore. Back away.
Aram: Not without Agent Navabi, the one inside. You let her go.
Moore: I don’t know who that is.
Kit: There’s no Agent inside.

 
[ Samar wakes up and takes in her surroundings. She’s in Devlin’s van, her wrists tied. A metal grating separates the front of the van from the back. She manages to sit up ]
Samar: [ GRUNTS ] [ SIGHS ]

[ RATS SQUEAKING ] [ Devlin is puttering in his “lab.” Devlin’s lab is populated with rats, snakes and large bugs in cages. He moves rats from one cage to another. He then unwraps a human hand and blows it with a hair dryer ] [ RATS SQUEAKING ]

[ Devlin comes out of the building with a cage of rats. He opens the front side door of the van and puts the cage on the passenger seat. He puts the hand inside the cage ]
Samar: [ GRUNTS LIGHTLY ] Where are we?
Devlin: Oh! Oh, you– [ CHUCKLING ] You’re awake. You startled me.
Samar: The girl from the hospital, where is she?
Devlin: Yeah. [ CLEARS THROAT ] [ EXHALES DEEPLY ] Mm. The taking of a life, I’ve only done it a few times, and I take no pleasure in it. Once you’re gone, we’ll make it right. Send you back to the earth – the way God intended.

 
[ The Post Office ] [ Nicholas T Moore, the cult leader, is now in custody and is being interrogated by Cooper. Cooper shows Moore images of Devlin from a surveillance camera ]
Cooper: I want a name.
Moore: I don’t know who that is.

Ressler: He abducted a federal agent who was working your case. I think you know him.
Kit: I don’t. I swear.
⋘⋙
Velma: All I know is that he was under contract. I don’t know his name.
Liz: What does that mean, “under contract”? Contract to do what?
Velma: He cleaned up messes.
Liz: You mean people?

Kit: How would I know that? The elders kept us completely isolated.
Ressler: And this guy made sure of that. Anyone who found your compound, he, uh, got rid of, disposed of?
⋘⋙
Cooper: [ To Moore ] How’s it work? Someone stumbles upon your little utopia, becomes a threat, and what – this man kills them? Gets rid of them?

Vera: [ To Liz ] The man in the photo simply made sure that the bodies never turned up.
⋘⋙
Kit: If this guy does exist, I never met him. Only Moore would know his name, anyway.
Ressler: Do you actually think that he may talk?
⋘⋙
Moore: What if I could remember this man’s name and help you find your missing agent? Would you let me walk away?
Cooper: And why would we agree to that?
Moore: Because I’m giving you a chance to save this young woman’s life – trade my life for hers. All you have to do is let me go – you get her back.
Cooper: Yeah. That’s not gonna happen.
[ Aram looks on through the one-way glass with consternation ]

 
[ Cooper’s office ] [ Red is looking at the surveillance photos ]
Cooper: Do you know his name?
Red: I don’t, but I can get your prisoner to give it to me.
Cooper: By torturing him?
Red: In my experience, conventional torture doesn’t yield much truth. Which is why I employ a man with a more holistic approach to enhanced interrogation. If his oxygen tank is full, he can be here in an hour.
Aram: An hour? Agent Navabi’s already been gone for an entire day.
Red: What else do you know about her abductor?
Ressler: He’s not part of the New Haven cult. Whoever he is, he was contracted.
Liz: Which means there’s a paper trail, some sort of proof of payments.
Cooper: Have the FBI Financial Fraud Unit locate Moore’s accounts. Boston and Albany are searching for leads.
Aram: While we wait for Mr. Reddington’s interrogator? We do not have time. That man in our interrogation room – he knows something, and we need to get him to talk [ INHALES DEEPLY ] like, now.
[ Phone rings ]
Dembe: Raymond.
Red: Take advantage of my offer, Harold. Brimley’s an old friend, and I love him dearly. He’s not up for grabs. If it weren’t Samar, I wouldn’t offer his services.
[ Red leaves ]

 
Aram: Sir. Let me talk to him. L-Let me see if I can get him to budge.
Cooper: What can you possibly say to him that we haven’t?
Aram: I don’t know, but, please, just give me two minutes with the man behind Samar’s abduction. That’s all I ask.

 
Red: [ On the phone ] Slow down, Smokey. Take a breath.
Smokey: I tracked down the address where Garvey went after he landed in San Jose. It’s a custom boat company, guarded six ways to Sunday. Supply trucks going in and out.
Red: Carrying what?
Smokey: Don’t know the what, but got the skinny on the why. I drank a couple’a drivers under the table to find out. The owner runs some kind of monthly auction – some legit items, some black book. Apparently, he’s not particular. [ CHUCKLES ] D-eaz-id y-eaz-ou h-eaz-ear wh-eaz-at eaz-I s-eaz-aid? It’s an auction, and if Garvey came here with that bag of yours, it’s up for auction, too. Given your obsession with getting it back, I gotta think that’s the last thing you want to see happen am I right?
Red: I want you to secure an invitation to the party.
Smokey: This ain’t no party.
Red: Call me when it’s confirmed.
[ CELLPHONE BEEPS ]
Liz: I brought you here to help find Samar, not hunt for the duffel bag.
Red: I offered Harold my assistance. Now I’m just juggling.

 
[ DOOR CLOSES ]
Aram: Mr Moore. I don’t know if you remember me. My name is Agent Aram Mojtabai.
Moore: I’ve been waiting for you.
Aram: What?
Moore: You’re the one who begged for her life. You care about her a great deal, don’t you?
Aram: Yes.
Moore: [ CLEARS THROAT ]
[ Moore glances at the CCTV camera. Aram takes the hint and turns off the feed ]
Moore: There’s something in my personal effects. I’m sure they’ve been inventoried. Get it for me. I’ll tell you what I know.

 
[ Devlin is driving the van ]
Devlin: You know, I was sort of thinking of, um, um, suffocating you. You know, it’s- it’s the most natural, just put you to sleep with my hand.
Samar: How thoughtful.
Devlin: Do you believe in God? You know, like, a protector, sort of a guardian angel?
Samar: Yes, I do.
Devlin: I don’t. Nature – that’s my God.

[ Aram opens a banker’s box containing Moore’s things. He takes out a New Testament ]
⋘⋙
Samar: Well, I suppose we’ll have to agree to disagree. I have an angel.
Devlin: Don’t matter. Even if you believe He puts us here, it’s Nature that takes us away. The beasts and the bugs, the vultures and the nitrogen.
[ RATS SQUEAKING ] [ Devlin steadies the cage with his hand ]
Devlin: Beautiful process. The basis of life itself, really. Without death, there is no life.

 
[ Aram has brought Moore a New Testament ]
Moore: Aren’t you curious?
Aram: Not even slightly. Agent Navabi – I need you to tell me what you know about the man who took her.
Moore: [ SIGHS ] Over the years, people have stumbled onto New Haven – a couple who were hiking, a hunter or two, [ CHUCKLES ] even an ex of one of our elders. Steven is the man I contact to get rid of the remains.
Aram: Steven who? What- What is his last name?
Moore: Feltmeyer. It’s fake. I don’t know his real name.
Aram: Do you know where he is now?
Moore: All I know is who I call if I need to hire Feltmeyer for a job.

 
[ In Devlin’s van ] [ RATS SQUEALING ]
Devlin: Shh. I’m sorry. They’re getting a little impatient. Problem, you know, isn’t so much their hunger as their teeth.
[ Samar has found some flares. She leverages one to break the plastic binding on her hands ]
Samar: And why is that?
Devlin: These are Himalayan Field Rats. They have 12 molars each, and their teeth just keep growing. Five inches a year, if you can believe that. That’s why they need something substantial to chew on to, you know, wear down those teeth.
Samar: And that’s me today.
Devlin: Yeah, that’s you.
[ Samar sets off a flare. It produces 🔥 and smoke, filling the van. She sets off 🔥 another ]
Devlin: Damn it!
[ TIRES SCREECH ] [ GRUNTS ] [ COUGHS ] [ TIRES SCREECHING ]
[ The van comes to a stop ] [ Devlin gets out ]
Devlin: [ COUGHING ]
[ Devlin opens the back door of the van. Samar punches Devlin ] [ GRUNTS ] [ ⚡️Scuffle⚡️ ] [ GRUNTING ] [ Samar runs ]
Devlin: Stop!
[ GRUNTS ] [ Devlin 💥💥 shoots 💥💥 ]

 
Red: You are absolutely right, Harold. It is not a weasel. It’s a badger.
Brimley: She’s a digger. She’ll go after insects and grubs, but she really goes nuts for ground-nesting birds.
Cooper: Our prisoner is not a ground-nesting bird.
Brimley: He is to Bernice.
Red: Harold, understand, Bernice is a seasoned professional. Recently retired after years in the film and television industries, where she had a prolific career playing a long list of heavies. She’s worked with Eli Wallach, Faye Dunaway. I think she did two pictures with George Kennedy–
Brimley: She did.
Red: But don’t be fooled by her off-screen persona. She is an absolute devil who has never missed her mark and will perform whatever the scene calls for. Believe me – 10 minutes with Bernice and Brimley, and your prisoner will give us the name of Samar’s abductor.
[ Aram appears ]
Aram: He already has.
Cooper: You got him to talk? How?
Aram: Uh, with all due respect, sir, all that matters now is that I did. Uh, turns out Moore, uh, goes through a third party to make contact – a guy by the name of Hannelore.
Red: Julius Hannelore?
Cooper: Do you know him?
Red: He’s a broker of sorts. An associate recommended him to me after Mr Kaplan passed.
Liz: She did not “pass.” She killed herself so I could get the duffel bag. It was her dying wish. Feel free to honor it.
Cooper: Can you reach out to your associate?
Red: I’m on my way.
Liz: I’m going with you in case you plan on juggling.
Red: Listen, if my bringing Teddy here suggests a new open-door policy, let me set the record straight. My associates are just that – mine. And unless otherwise indicated, my meetings with them are private.
Cooper: Then Agent Keen will be outside the meeting so you can immediately relay any pertinent information.
Red: [ SCOFFS ]

 
Devlin: Stop! [ 💥💥 GUNSHOTS 💥💥 ]
[ Samar huddles beside a tree. She finds a thick stick and hides it in her sleeve before Devlin finds her ]
Devlin: Look, lady, there’s not much point in running. I told you I don’t like this, but I have a gun, and I will use it if you make me. I was nice to you, and you did this. Get up! Walk.

 
[ A mortuary ] [ CLASSICAL MUSIC PLAYS ]
[ Julius Hannelore prepares a corpse ]
Red: Julius. How do you do it? How do you make a person more presentable in death than they were in life?
Julius: Family recipe. [ LAUGHS ] Formaldehyde, glutaraldehyde, humectants, dye, water, and a secret sauce three generations in the making. Plus, the occasional cotton ball.
[ Julius slips a cotton ball under one of the corpse’s eyelids ]
Julius: Mm. Mr Sulzberger is an open casket. Viewing’s in an hour, so unless it’s urgent–
Red: I’m looking for Steven Feltmeyer.
Julius: I can reach out, broker an arrangement.
Red: This is a pressing matter. I don’t have time to go through channels.
Julius: The channels are the channels.
[ Julius trims a thread at the corner of the dead man’s mouth ]
Julius: Everything in its time and mackerel in August.
[ Red pulls out his gun and points it at the corpse’s head ]
Red: I’m afraid I’m going to need my mackerel now, or else the Sulzbergers are going to need to close the casket.
Julius: You wouldn’t.
Red: I’d sooner take a knife to the “Mona Lisa,” but Feltmeyer has an associate of mine, and I’d like her back. Preferably before she needs her lips sewn shut.

 
[ CHOIR VOCALIZING ]
[ Nicholas Moore sits at the interrogation table. He opens the New Testament Aram retrieved for him and peels back the foil liner inside the cover. A small white pill is hidden there. He closes his hand on the pill ]

 
[ In Red’s car, Liz is on her cell ]
Liz: Feltmeyer’s real name is Lawrence Devlin. I’ll work up a profile to present as soon as I get back.
Red: Good luck with that. Where can we drop you?
Liz: Wait. You’re leaving? We still don’t have Samar.
Red: If there was more I could contribute, I would do it gladly, but there isn’t. So, yes, I’m leaving.
Liz: Knowing that I can’t come with you.
Red: My thoughts and prayers will be with you in your search. I hope that provides some consolation.
Liz: Yeah, I’m sure you do.

 
Devlin: Okay, here’s what we’re gonna do. We’re gonna take you to the farm, I’m gonna hold you down, and I’m gonna make one real clean incision in your lower lumbar vertebra. And I’m gonna sever your spinal cord to immobilize you. And then, we’re gonna let the rats have their way. And that’s just the way it is ’cause of what you did. Get in!
[ Samar turns and shoves the stick deep into Devlin’s thorax ]
Devlin: [ GRUNTS ] Whoa! [ GUN COCKS ] No! Don’t you– Get in!
[ Devlin pulls the stick out ] [ GRUNTING ] [ BREATHING HEAVILY ]

 
[ The Post Office ]
Liz: According to Reddington’s source, Feltmeyer’s real name is Lawrence Dane Devlin.
Devlin is a fixer who specializes in making problems go away. Apparently, Devlin’s disposal methods have a scientific flair. He considers himself a thanatologist.
Cooper: I don’t know what that is.
Aram: It’s the scientific discipline devoted to the study of death and decay.
Liz: As recently as 2005, Devlin held a research position at the University of Tennessee’s body farm – until he came under investigation. Apparently, several of the cadavers Devlin requisitioned turned out to have missing limbs and other body parts.
Ressler: Were charges ever filed?
Liz: Yes, but Devlin and all three witnesses vanished without a trace. And since that time, Devlin’s been in the body disposal business.
Ressler: While performing experiments in his basement. Which means there are victims we can chase down as potential leads.
Liz: The list of potential victims goes on and on and on. But they’re exactly that – victims in unsolved crimes who were never found or recovered.
Aram: And this guy has Samar.
[ Agent Miller interrupts ]
Agent Miller: Sir, we have a situation.

 
[ On the floor of the interrogation room, Nicholas Moore lies on the floor writhing, foam coming from his mouth. Aram goes to him, takes off his jacket and puts it under Moore’s head. He looks back at Cooper ]
Cooper: [ To Agent Miller ] Call an ambulance.
[ Cooper notices the New Testament on the table ]

 
[ Devlin is driving the van, PANTING ]
Samar: It’s getting harder for you to breathe because your lungs are slowly up filling with blood. Without a doctor, you’ll be starved of oxygen until eventually you’ll be forced to aspirate on your own blood. But on the bright side, it’s an entirely natural way to go, likely what God intended for you.
[ Devlin is losing consciousness ] [ GROANS ] [ The van weaves ]
Samar: Hey. Hey, pull over – You can’t drive. Hey, pull over.
[ HORN HONKS ] [ The van veers off the road into trees and is overturned, ending up on its side ]
[ GROANING ]
[ Samar ends up being impaled on a lug wrench ]

 
[ San Jose, Costa Rica ] [ Smokey and Red are at a café ]
[ Smokey tosses a coin in the air and slides it toward Red ]
Smokey: This is what you need to get in. I pinched a couple off the drivers I snorkeled tequila with. Whew! F-Y’s-I, we’re going out for another round later, so don’t shoot ’em or anything. Red: Ah, Mercury Dime. Or more accurately, Wingéd Liberty. Here’s a fun fact – the image was modeled on Elsie Stevens, the wife of poet Wallace Stevens. “For the listener, who listens in the snow, and, nothing himself, beholds nothing that is not there and the nothing that is.”

 
[ Red and Dembe gain admittance to the auction venue ]

In the background:
Auctioneer: All right, ladies and gentlemen, our next item up for bid is this magnificent beast lot number 16, an item any climate-change denier will love. This polar bear would make an excellent addition–

Red: [ Reading ] It’s not on the list.

Auctioneer: –to any collection.

Dembe: Maybe it’s not for sale.

Auctioneer: And I will start bidding at $50,000.

Red: Or maybe it already sold.

Auctioneer: $50,000. Do I have $50,000? $50,000 is bid. Thank you, madam. Looking for $55,000. $55,000. New bidder, thank you. $60,000?

Dembe: [ Reading ] “The final item won’t be revealed until just prior to the start of bidding.”
Maybe that’s the duffel?
Red: Then there may still be time.

Auctioneer: Looking for $70,000.

Red: Excuse me. The person in charge, where might they be?
[ The waiter gestures toward the back ]

Auctioneer: $70,000. Thank you, sir. Is there any advance over $70,000? Sold!

 
[ Red talks to two guards ]
Red: Tell him it’s Raymond Reddington.
Tall Guard: Mr Gonzalez doesn’t see customers.
Red: Please, just tell him it’s Raymond Reddington.
[ The Tall Guard goes into a back room ] [ DOOR CREAKS ] [ AUCTIONEER CALLING ]
[ Red is left with a very Muscular Guard ]
Red: I’ve heard steroids make your penis shrink. Have you found that to be the case?
[ The Muscular Guard stares at him ]
[ CALLING CONTINUES ] [ The tall guard returns ]
Tall Guard: Answer’s no.
Red: He does know I’m Number One on the Wanted List, right?
Tall Guard: He does. He told me to tell you the last Number One is his driver.
Red: [ LAUGHING ] Oh, I mean, obviously, he’s joking.
Tall Guard: He’s not much for jokes. Move along.
Red: Yes, of course. If you could just direct me to the bathroom.
 

Flashback
Smokey: They got metal detectors, wands, with a guest list that’s a who’s who of scumbags. They ain’t taking any chances. No one gets a piece in once the party starts.
Red: What about before it starts?
Smokey: After our night on the town, the drivers were so bent – [ CHUCKLES ] They needed help off-loading some of the goodies. I found a bathroom on the first floor. Look under the sink.

[ TAPE PEELING ] [ Red removes the gun Smokey had taped under the sink ]

 
[ In the overturned van, Devlin is passed out in the front. Samar is in the back, with the tire iron stuck in her abdomen ] [ RAT SQUEAKING ]
[ Samar pulls out the wrench ]
Samar: [ COUGHS ] [ GROANS ]
[ Samar uses her scarf to apply a tourniquet around her stomach ]
Samar: [ GRUNTS, PANTING ] [ Wrench CLATTERS LIGHTLY ]
Samar: [ GROANS ]
 

Auctioneer: Moving on. Lot number 17. An Assyrian relief from Nimrud, dating from the 7th century BCE, showing–

Dembe: Plunder of the Islamic State.

Auctioneer: –the royal chariot.

Dembe: They insist the antiquity of the idolatry of the Qur’an demands be destroyed.
Red: Or sold at auction.
Dembe: The sale of illegal artifacts is a major source of funding for terrorism in the Middle East. But for Muslims, this is our history. A link to our past. What they are doing is like committing cultural genocide.

Auctioneer: It’s two bidders. $750,000. Thank you, sir. The bid is with you at $750,000. Looking for $800,000.

Dembe: But this is a problem for another day.
Red: Maybe. Maybe not.

Auctioneer: Any advance over $800,000? $850,000, sir? Is $850,000 bid? $850,000. The bid is at $850,000. Looking for $900,000. $900,000

 
[ Red walks up to the Muscular Guard ]
Red: [ WHISPERING ] I genuinely don’t want this to become unpleasant.
Muscular Guard: Mr Gonzalez said “No.”
Red: Hmm. You know, it’s awful, but people do tend to associate a thick neck with a low IQ. How about shattering that cliché by reasonably persuading him to change his mind?
Muscular Guard: That’s not gonna happen.

Auctioneer: And we’re at $1.7 million.

Red: Mm.

Auctioneer: Do I have $1.7 million? Thank you, sir. $1.7 million I have. Looking for $1.8 million. Looking for $1.8 million. I have $1.8 million. Thank you, sir.

Red: [ Loudly ] Point of order!
Auctioneer: I’m sorry, sir. Are you bidding?
Red: [ To the bidders ] Does it bother either of you, the terrorism of it all?
Auctioneer: Sir, I’m going to have to ask you to sit down.
Red: Either of you? No? Good. That makes this so much easier.
[ Red shoots the two bidders in the leg 💥💥 then puts his hands up ] [ CROWD SCREAMING ]
Tall Guard: Come with me.
Red: Ah, I thought you’d never ask.

 
Ressler: We may have something.
Liz: An address on Lawrence Devlin. He has a farm in Preston County, West Virginia.
Cooper: Nicholas Moore is dead. Toxicology believes he took his own life. Had a cyanide pill hidden inside his Bible, which had been processed into evidence. Any idea how he may have gotten it?
Aram: I got it for him. [ SIGHS ] That’s how I got him to talk, sir. He said he’d help us find Samar if I stole it for him, and so, I did. And I’ll accept whatever punishment you think is appropriate, but it got us a name and now a location where Samar may be.
Cooper: You’ve run the address?
Aram: Not only that, but I found a cellphone registered under one of Devlin’s known aliases registered to that same farm.

[ Still trapped in the van, Samar uses the lug wrench to try to pry through the heavy metal grating enclosing her ]
⋘⋙
Aram: Now, the HLR – that’s the Home Location Register – is updated every time a phone’s SIM is transferred into another location area, and according to the HLR, that phone was in Grafton County two days ago.
Liz: At the hospital where Samar was abducted.
Cooper: Can you triangulate its current location?
⋘⋙
[ Samar continues working on the wire grating. The wrench slips ]
Samar: [ SCREAMS ] Ohh!
[ She drops the wrench ] [ CLATTERING ] [ Samar resorts to kicking ]
Samar: [ BREATHES DEEPLY ] [ GRUNTING ]

Aram: Devlin must be in the middle of nowhere because he’s only pinging off of one tower.
Ressler: You can’t triangulate it.
Aram: Not off one tower. They could be anywhere within a 45-mile radius.

Samar: [ PANTING ] Oh, my God.
[ Samar tries to reach Devlin’s phone through a small opening she has made in the grating ]
[ VIBRATING CONTINUES, OBJECTS CLATTER ] [ RAT SQUEAKING ]
[ RINGING ] [ BEEPS ]
Devlin’s voice on cell: Leave a message.
[ Samar almost reaches the phone. Suddenly, Devlin comes to life and wrestles it away ]
Aram: [ Over phone ] Lawrence Devlin, this is Special Agent Aram Mojtabai of the FBI. We know you have Agent Navabi.
[ DEVLIN GRUNTS loudly ]
Aram: We know where you live, and we will find you, and when we do, Samar Agent Navabi better be alive.
Devlin: [ GRUNTS ]
[ RATS SQUEAKING ]
Aram: You may not be aware of this, but taking the life of a federal officer is a capital crime, punishable by death. So if she’s- If you kill her – we will kill you. [ CLICKS ]

 
[ Devlin pulls himself up and stands ]
Devlin: [ GRUNTING ]
Samar: Where are you going?
Devlin: You said I should go get a doctor, so I’m gonna go get myself one. And you, I’m not sure about. I suspect you’re gonna die here!
[ Devlin crawls out of the window ]

 
[ At Devlin’s farm ]
[ TIRES SCREECH ] [ FBI VEHICLES arrive ] [ DOORS CLOSING ]
Ressler: I’ll get the house.
Liz: I have the shed. [ DOOR CREAKS ]
[ INDISTINCT SHOUTING ]
[ Agents break in the door of the house ]
— Federal agents!
— Move in!
[ INDISTINCT SHOUTING ]
[ A man tries to run ]
Aram: Stop! Stop! Stop! I said, stop. Stop!
[ Aram chases the man and catches him. The man, Isaiah Hull, GRUNTS ]
Aram: Samar, where is she? Agent Navabi.
Isaiah: [ GRUNTING ]
Aram: Lawrence Devlin, where’d he take her? Where did he take her?

 
[ The back room of the auction venue ]
Mr Gonzalez: Give me one reason why I shouldn’t have you shot.
Red: How about $4 million for the Assyrian relief? That’s more than twice what your two highest bidders were offering.
Gonzalez: That’s not how this works. You don’t shoot your way to the front of the line. You bid your way to it.
Red: And normally, I’d respect that, but I’m pressed for time, something a smart businessman such as yourself should take full advantage of.
Gonzalez: $5 million.
Red: Surely you can do better than that.
Gonzalez: $6 million.
Red: Done. On two conditions. First, you keep the proceeds. The terrorists get nothing. Tell them the shipment was lost or stolen or intercepted by Customs. I’ll find a more appropriate home for the relief.
Gonzalez: And the second?
Red: I get the duffel bag.
Gonzalez: What duffel bag?
Red: The final item–
Gonzalez: –Are schematics to Samsung’s next Android operating system.
Red: Ian Garvey came here. He brought you a duffel bag.
Gonzalez: I have no duffel bag, and I’ve never met Ian Garvey.
Red: But- But he was here?
Gonzalez: Not to meet with me.
Red: Then I have a third condition – I want to see your surveillance footage.

 
Ressler: Look, this isn’t true or false. We know you worked for Devlin.
Isaiah: I don’t know where he is.
Liz: But you know how to get ahold of him, how to reach him.
Isaiah: No, I’m telling you – I don’t know anything about your friend. I just manage the property. Mr Devlin lets me stay here. In exchange, I take care of the stock.
Liz: The stock? Mm. You mean the insects you keep out in the shed?
Isaiah: Insects, rodents arthropods. They need a lot of care.
Ressler: So, what are the insects for?
Aram: [ Agitated ] Okay, okay, uh, Mr Hull, I-I need to be very clear with you. The FBI is, uh, going to find Lawrence Devlin, and when they do, they’re gonna prosecute him to the fullest extent of the law, and when that happens, you will be an accessory. Now, whatever you know, however you can help, will be taken into consideration when charges are brought against you. Which will happen.
Isaiah: He does experiments w-with the bodies. That’s what the arthropods are for, studying decomposition under various settings.
Liz: You know where he does this?
Isaiah: Mm. He calls it “The Lab.” It’s on his grandfather’s land. Taylor- Taylor County.

 
[ Samar continues trying to pry open the heavy wire grating entrapping her in the van ] [ WIRE CREAKING ] [ GRUNTS, PANTING ]
[ Bear GROWLING ] 🔘 See Note
Devlin: [ Outside ] Let me in! No! Help! Help!
[ THUDS ] [ A bloody hand splats against the van window ]
Devlin: Oh, no, no! [ GROANING ]
[ THUDS ] [ Devlin GROANING ] [ The van shakes ]
Devli: Aah! No! No more! Ohh!
[[ BEAR ATTACK CONTINUES ]]
Devlin: Aah! [ GRUNTING ]
[ Devlin’s cellphone is thrown free. Samar manages to retrieve it ]
[ The bear rams the van ] [ THUD ]
[ The van rolls down an embankment and lands in 🌊 water 🌊 , where it begins to sink ]
[ 🌊 Water 🌊 pours in as Samar kicks and rats swim ]

 
[ At Devlin’s “Lab” on his grandfather’s land, agents comb the grounds ] [ RADIO CHATTER ]
Ressler: I got something over here.
Aram: What is it?
Ressler: It’s a body.
Aram: What? What body? What do you mean, “a body”?
Ressler: It’s old. It’s not Samar.
[ Liz finds a file in a closed vinyl folder next to the body ]
Liz: This guy’s serious. I don’t understand. How did nobody know this was out here?
Ressler: Bigger question is, how far does this place go?

 
Gonzolez: This is from last month’s auction.
[ COMPUTER BEEPS ]
[ The video surveillance shows a man with the black duffel bag ]
Red: Yeah. That man. There.
Gonzolez: He’s a valued customer. I know him as Max Birmingham. What his real name is, I cannot say.
Red: I can.

 
[ Inside the sinking van, Samar struggles ]
[ RAT SQUEAKING ] [ GRUNTING ] [ BREATHING HEAVILY ]
[ Samar is able to retrieve the cell phone from the front of the van ]

 
[ The FBI team continues searching ] [ Aram sees fingers protruding from a fresh grave ]
Aram: Oh, God. I think I have something.
Ressler: [ On comms ] What is it?
Liz: Aram, talk to us.
Ressler: What do you have? Aram!
[ CELLPHONE RINGING ]
Aram: No, no! Samar, no. No.
[ Aram drops to his knees and digs ]
[ RINGING CONTINUES ]
Ressler: Aram, what is it?
Aram: [ COUGHING ]
[ Aram answers his cellphone ] [ CELLPHONE BEEPS ]
Aram: Hello?
Samar: [ On phone ] Aram.
Aram: Samar?! Oh, my God, are you okay?
[ 🌊 WATER 🌊 RUSHING ]
Samar: There was an accident.
Aram: An accident? Are- Are- Are you hurt? Where are you?
Samar: The van, it’s in the water.
Aram: Water, okay. What- What- What water? Listen, um, I think I think we’re close. Just tell me where you are. Samar? Come on, Samar, talk to me. Lawrence Devlin, the man who took you.
Samar: He’s dead. There was- There was a bear.
Aram: A bear? As in – a bear? Okay, listen, now, the water, is it a lake or a river?
Samar: Yes. Yes, yes.
Aram: It’s a lake or a river?
[ METAL CREAKS ] [ The 🌊 water 🌊 has risen to Samar’s chin. The back of the van is more deeply submerged than the front ]
Samar: If you had asked me to marry you, my love, um – The answer would have been yes.
Aram: That’s- I- [ BREATHING DEEPLY ] Samar. Listen to me. All that matters is getting your home safely. So, please, just tell me where you are. [ VOICE BREAKING ] Tell me where you are, Samar. Come on. Come on, Samar! Samar, come on!

 
Aram: There was an accident and water. The van was in water.
Ressler: Well, the only water nearby is the Tygart Valley River to the east.
Liz: That river runs for miles.
Aram: Yeah, but we don’t have to look for all of it. When I ran a search for Devlin’s cell signal before, it only pinged one tower in the region uh, here, outside Kingwood. That limits us to four or five square miles of river. She said there was a bear.
Liz: That means we have to get moving.
Ressler: [ To the search team ] All right, listen up. We’re gonna refocus our search to a five-mile area along the Tygart River Valley.
[ Aram gets in an SUV and speeds away ]

 
[ Aram stops his vehicle ] [ TIRES SCREECH ] [ ENGINE SHUTS OFF, KEYS JINGLING ] [ SEATBELT CLICKS ] [ BREATHING SHARPLY ] [ He hits the car seat ]
Aram: Come on! Where are you?!
[ Aram gets out. He sees tire tracks and some trees that have been been stripped of their bark – and some broken glass ]

[ Looking down the embankment, Aram sees the van in the river, mostly submerged ]
Aram: Guys! Guys, I-I found it! I think I see the van.
Ressler: [ Over comms ] Where are you?
Aram: I don’t know. Some- Um, I-I turned north off Kannan, less than a quarter mile– Samar. Samar!
[ Aram rips off his jacket and runs down the embankment ]

[ Inside the van, Samar is 🌊 underwater 🌊, desperately trying to dislodge the metal barrier ]

Ressler: Aram, hold on. We’re on our way.
Liz: A medevac is en route. They’re just looking for a place to land.
[ Aram dives into the river ]

She needs to leave

Are all covered in frost

[ Aram gets into the driver’s end of the van where there are still a few inches of air ]
Aram: [ GASPING ] Okay.

♪ Opening
The partly open locks

Aram: Hang on. Hang on.
[ Aram finds the keys to the enclosure where Samar is trapped. He drops the keys, then dives down to retrieve them ]

♪ While the others start to disagree

[ Aram drops the keys again, retrieves them again ]
Aram: Hang on. Hang on.

♪ On returning

[ And again ]
Aram: Hang on.

♪ To rough and moving grounds

Aram: [ GASPS ]

♪ And if I should come to be
Relieved

Aram: Come on! [ GASPING ]

[ Aram at last gets the compartment open ]
Aram: [ GASPS ]
[ He swims into the back of the van and pulls out the limp Samar ]

♪ She feels
She needs to leave
Rearranged
To allow a newborn path …

[ Aram swims with Samar to shore, lays her down on the ground and does CPR ]
Aram: Come on. Come on, Samar. Come on.

[ Samar is unresponsive ]
Aram: [ Desperately ] Come on. Come on!

[ Samar remains unresponsive ]
[ Aram takes Samar’s head in his hands ]

 
[ Costa Rica. Smokey is in the back of a car with Red. Dembe drives ]
Smokey: You mind telling me who this- this- this Max Birmingham really is?
Red: Sutton Ross. He died years ago. [ CHUCKLES ] Or so I thought.
Dembe: That’s his connection to Garvey.
Smokey: What is?
Red: Garvey was a US Marshal. He put people in witness protection. Made them disappear or appear to be dead. Garvey must have made that happen for Sutton Ross. We came all this way to find the duffel has been handed from one enemy of mine to another.
Dembe: And yet, neither chose to make its contents public.
Smokey: If what you’re looking for is as valuable as you say, why- why- why- why didn’t they put it up for auction?
Red: I have no idea.

 
[ At a hospital, Samar is on a respirator, unconscious ] [ MONITOR BEEPING ]
Aram: [ Upbeat, to Samar ] So, I, uh, did a little research. I know, I know. Pathetic, right? And yet hang on maybe, uh, maybe not so pathetic. Okay. So, I came across this study from 2014 that, uh, showed how playing familiar music to people in, uh, in minimally conscious states enhanced recovery. They found that certain audio cues improved cerebral plasticity and, um and helped them recover. So, uh, since, at the moment, you can’t get to your favorite playlist, I thought that I would bring your favorite playlist to you.

Red: You follow me to where you don’t belong, watch tapes that are none of your business.
Liz: I sent his picture to the Post Office.
Red: You do what you know I don’t want you to do.
Liz: By the time I get back, they’ll have his real ID.
[ SEAGULLS CAWING ]
Red: You disappoint me. And yet, somehow, at the same time, you impress me. You persevere.
Liz: Runs in the family, I guess.
Red: [ CHUCKLES ] I suppose it was inevitable.
Liz: What’s that?
Red: Our sprint to the finish. The bag is just out of reach now. After everything we’ve been through, it won’t be long before one of us has it.
Liz: No, not one of us. Me.
Red: What would you say to flying back with me on my jet, enjoying a few hours of peace and quiet before we repair to our neutral corners?
Liz: I’d say that’s a very generous offer.
Red: Yes, it would be, if I was to offer that. [ BREATHES DEEPLY ] Which I’m not. Goodbye, Elizabeth. I’ll be waiting at the finish line.
