🔴 Script 8:14 Misère

Brief (Where we’re at):

Anne, the birdwatching woman who Red met in a park in New York City some months ago – and who he stood up for a movie date because Dembe thought it would be dangerous to her if Red were to date her – didn’t disappear from his life after all. He has been making trips to visit her in her hometown of Cottonwood Falls, Kansas, and they have formed a romantic relationship. Dembe is still concerned, warning Red that multiple trips create a pattern for his enemies to track. Sure enough, on his sixth trip to see her, Neville Townsend and her merry band of mercenaries decide to join them.

Before their showing up, Red had shared little about his “other life” with Anne. This was enough to make Anne’s best friend Lois, a member of the local police force, suspicious and somewhat antagonistic toward Red. She dropped by to talk to Anne about possibly doing a background check on Red. Anne objected that she already knew enough about Red and admitted she loved him, a conversation Red overheard. After Lois left, Red told Anne that Lois was right, but Anne quickly changed the subject to birdwatching and proposed they go out. As Red looked out the window, he saw a suspicious van, and concocted a reason to send Anne into town. He then tracked a man from the van pretending to be checking the ground wires. When Red questioned him, he went for a gun. Red grabbed him and threatened him with a chef’s knife.

Red: How many are coming?
Water & Power Guy: ⋘⋙ Everyone.
[ Red slices the man’s throat ]

Red drove to town, grabbed a bewildered Anne and headed to the only place that could possibly assist them: the local police station, where Lois was on duty. Red identified himself as a fugitive, surrendered, and pleaded with Lois, the Police Chief and other officers to take the situation seriously and take Anne to a safe place. But the assault began before Anne could be evacuated. After the police chief was shot by a sniper, Lois was next in charge, and as help was miles away, Lois agreed to let Red help defend the station but promised to arrest him afterward. Most of the defending officers were killed and Lois was shot in the thigh, but Lois, Anne and Red made it to a hardened holding cell just ahead of Neville Townsend and his men. Sirens from the approaching backup units send Townsend scurrying.

Red applied a tourniquet to Lois’s leg, saving her life, but that didn’t stop her from going pointing her gun at him and telling him he was under arrest when he, too, tried to leave. But Anne intervened, standing between Lois and Red.

When the FBI and area police arrived, Red was gone. Lois and Anne said he’d escaped, but when Anne got home, she opened the trunk of the car and there was Red. After hugs, Red advised Anne to go somewhere to hide. She asked why, if she would be in danger anyway, they couldn’t be together:

Red: Because what I have to do and how I have to do it, you can’t be a part of that. No one should be a part of that.
[ They kiss, embrace ]

As Red drove out of town to link up with Dembe, a song ( ♫ “Somewhere Beyond the Sea” by Bobby Darin) came on the radio. It had become their theme song. At the song’s dramatic peak, Red suddenly did a U-turn and headed back to Anne’s. He opened the door and called her name. Her frightened face appeared. And someone with a gun:

Red: Elizabeth.

♫ Angel of the Morning
By Merrilee Rush
