šŸ”“ Script 8:22 Konets (ā€œThe Endā€)

Brief (Where we’re at):

Red spirited Liz away to the ā€œepicenterā€ of The Blacklist ~ an intelligence gathering operation located in a Cold War era, nuclear blast resistant bunker in Latvia ~ to tell her ā€œthe truthā€ about who she is, who he is and what happened to her mother. He does this, through the magic of cinema, by telling a story which is narrated by key people in the series, living and dead. They include her mother Katarina Rostova (at about 35yo), her father the real Raymond Reddington, Red and Katarina’s friend Ilya Koslov, Katarina’s mentor Ivan Stepanov and lastly, Tatiana Petrova who we and Liz find out – for the first time – was not Liz’s mother but another operative resembling her who also took assignments from Liz’s grandfather Dominic (Dom) Wilkinson.

It was Tatiana, not Dom’s daughter Katarina, who was set up to be killed by a car bomb in Belgrade. Dom planned that Tatiana would be killed, so that the KGB, Neville Townsend snd others would believe the real Katarina had died so they’d stop hunting her. But Tatiana escaped the blast with her life though her husband was killed. The KGB and others still wanted her so Tatiana hid, eventually getting help from Red. Red and Tatiana apparently then struck up a romantic relationship, so years later, she ā€˜betrayed him with a kiss’ before injecting him with Ketamine, and torturing him unsuccessfully for information to prove she had been set up by Dom. When that didn’t work, she insinuated herself into Liz’s life gaining access to Dom who, under torture and having hallucinations, told her ā€œeverything,ā€ not only that Red was N-13, but Katarina’s new identity and location. Red intercepted Tatiana before she could tell the Townsend organization, and killed her. The murder was witnessed by Liz. Believing that Tatiana was her mother Katarina, Liz then went on a rampage against Red, which eventually landed her at the #1 spot on The Blacklist.

But if Tatiana wasn’t Katarina – who Red says remains ā€œhiddenā€ – where/who is Katarina today? And who is Red?

In Latvia, Red admitted to Liz that he is N-13, the operative who acquired the Sikorsky Archive, the 13 packets of classified information taken from the KGB files when the Soviet Union fell. This information was the ā€œseedā€ from which Red’s global operation grew. This operation, Red tells Liz, has two purposes: to keep Liz safe and her mother hidden. He insists he is ā€˜not a Russian asset and Ivan Stepanov is just an old friend.’ In the story told by Red and narrated by Katarina and Ilya Koslov, Katarina and Ilya ā€œcreatedā€ Red because Katarina didn’t want Liz to bear the burden of having killed her father; and so that Red could keep a protective eye on Liz. So Katarina and Ilya ā€œresurrectedā€ the identity of Raymond Reddington. But someone went under the knife to have plastic surgery and it’s not clear who. There are even hints that it might have been Katarina herself, which would solve two problems: who Red is and where Katarina went. But – wow.

In any case, right when Liz was insisting on finally getting these answers, reality intervened. Liz was shot through the upper abdomen in a hail of gunfire as Neville Townsend’s men raided the facility. (Liz forgot to turn off the tracking chip that allowed Townsend to track her and Red to Latvia.) Townsend reverted to his prior dastardly plan of killing Liz as Red watches, so whatever Liz’s take on Red’s latest version of events, that was put aside. They were on the same side now. Red got up from assisting Liz to talk to Townsend, leaving his pistol within reach of Liz. She took the hint and shot Townsend in the leg, allowing her, with help from Red and Dembe, to retreat to a super-hardened ā€œNestā€ beneath the bunker. The Nest is capable of withstanding a 20 megaton nuclear blast. It’s also equipped with the means of incinerating intruders above. So, Townsend is toast – but his henchman Vandyke was outside of the bunker and will likely be seen again.

Red: When all this began, I was such a different person. Blinded by passion and inexperience. What we built – it’s been fulfilling in ways that I can’t even begin to describe. It’s been a wonder. Thrilling and challenging. A blessing and a curse. Whatever it’s been – it’s become who I am. But at some point, it became clear to me that I wasn’t really in control of any of this. I thought I was. At times, I-I feel like I am. But I’m not.
ā‹˜ā‹™
[ Liz has been sitting on her bed. She gets up, goes over to a chest of drawers, and takes out a pistol ]
ā‹˜ā‹™
Red: No matter how much I try or care or give of myself – I have no control over how any of this ends. And that is crushing if I think about it too much. So I don’t think about it. I ignore it, deny it, and try to convince myself that I can keep Elizabeth safe, Agnes safe, which is why I-I feel I have to do this. I have to believe that I can help– Because the alternative is ju– It’s just–
Dembe: I understand.

Dembe: No.
Red: Me neither. [ He puts on his fedora ] Let’s go.

[ Liz is parked in her car, talking to Agnes ]
Agnes: What’s wrong, Mom?
Liz: Oh, nothing. I’m just– I’m just sad. But I’ll be okay. We had such fun in New York, didn’t we?
Agnes: Why are you sad?
Liz: Well, uh– Someone that I care about is sick. He’s– very sick.
Agnes: Did he see a doctor?
Liz: No. Unfortunately, the doctors can’t help him get any better.
Agnes: Is he gonna die?
Liz: Yeah, honey. He is.
Agnes: That is sad.
Liz: Yeah. But I think my friend is trying to be brave. I think he feels fortunate.
Agnes: What’s “fortunate”?
Liz: Well, I think my friend knows he’s lived a good life that he’s seen a lot of neat and different places and he has a lot of friends that love him.

[ Dembe is driving Red to the restaurant ]
Red: Dembe, will you stop the car, please?
Dembe: What’s the matter?
Red: I want to walk.
Dembe: It’s not safe.
[ Dembe pulls over; Red gets out ]
Red: I’ll meet you at the restaurant.
[ Red walks along the sidewalk, looks around, looks up at the sky, reaches out his hand to touch some flowers ]

Liz: So even though he’s sad he’s gonna die he feels fortunate that he’s lived a good life.
Agnes: Your friend’s blessed.
Liz: Yeah! Blessed! Where did you learn a word like that, smartie?
Agnes: You always say that even though Daddy had to go to Heaven, he was okay with that because he felt blessed to know me when I was a little baby.
Liz: Yeah. I think my friend feels blessed, like Daddy.
Agnes: I feel blessed because of you.
Liz: [ Voice breaking ] Oh, honey. Me too. I’m blessed because of you. And don’t forget, no matter what happens, I love you to the moon and back.

[ Ressler talks to Cooper from his hospital bed ]
Ressler: No, I spoke with Keen myself – She turned Reddington down, said she was gonna leave the country. I think she already left.
Cooper: Except she hasn’t. Elizabeth phoned Aram. She’s in DC. She also asked for his forgiveness.
Ressler: Forgiveness? For what?
Cooper: Your guess is as good as mine. But I fear it has something to do with Reddington positioning her to be the heir to his criminal empire.
Ressler: So he convinced her. But now they’re gonna need to convince the world.
Cooper: I don’t follow.
Ressler: Look, you and I both know the people who work in Reddington’s world aren’t gonna accept Keen’s taking of the reins just because he announced it. If he wants her to be taken seriously, if she’s gonna be respected in his world, she’s gonna have to make a statement, demonstrate her value.
Cooper: Which is why she’s gonna need Aram’s forgiveness.
[ Park and Aram enter ]
Cooper: Agent Ressler, I’m putting you on speaker with Park and Mojtabai.
Aram: Whoa! Hey! Hey! Good news! Yeah, what’s that?
Ressler: What do you mean?
Aram: You’re alive. That is incredible news. I-I literally thought you were not gonna make it.
Cooper: Well, thankfully, he did. Do we have any updates?
Park: I still can’t reach Reddington, Dembe, or Agent Keen.
Ressler: Oh, my God. That’s it. He’s not gonna make it. She’s gonna kill Reddington.
Aram: Wait. Who is?
Ressler: Keen. She’s gonna kill him. She’s gonna make a statement, demonstrate that she’s no longer an agent.
Aram: Kill Mr. Reddington.
Ressler: That’s how she’s gonna prove to the world that she’s seizing control of his empire, and she’s gonna do it in public. She’s gonna– She’s gonna kill him.
Cooper: Reddington was here, talking about his death, talking about taking care of Elizabeth when he’s gone.
Park: Wait. Back up. You think Reddington knows this is happening?
Ressler: No, I think it’s his ideaā—
