🔴 Why I feature slideshows

🔴 Why I feature slideshows

Technology

I’ve settled upon using slideshows as a preferred form for visual media for this blog for a couple of reasons. First, I tweet a lot. After each show, I tweet screen shots from the show, trying to capture key moments, quotes and major plot points. It’s sort of like a graphic novel or a scrapbook. So I began including a list of these tweets at the end of each annotated script. These naturally included the links to the screenshots resulting in a very klutzy way to recreate the Twitter experience. So I started looking for some more elegant way to do this and discovered YouTube has developed an app for making slideshows out of photos, turning them into you videos. It’s located here:

🔴 Season Two Review

🔴 Review: Season Two of The Blacklist is even

¤ better than Season One

March 10, 2015

The glue that holds this show together is the mysterious relationship between Elizabeth “Liz” Keen and the enigmatic, irreverent Raymond, “Red” Reddington. The second season is better in many ways than the first. The bad guys are more realistic and the plot lines explore the realm of international politics and important domestic issues. The research into the background of the procedural aspects of the show holds up well, making it “educational TV” for an America naive about matters like neurobiological research, human trafficking, the “down” side of capitalism and the dangers of secret international agendas (electronic surveillance, the various threats to national sovereignty and insidious threats to security) that threaten democracy. Red’s values come into better focus as matters from his past turn out to have national and international implications.

🔴 Take-Aways from Daniel Knauf’s Tweets

Feb 12, 2015

Daniel Knauf is a Co-Executive Producer and senior writer for The Blacklist. He answers questions about the show during and after it and is quite comfortable with Twitter. I don’t know a better way to re-capture Twitter (but I’ll try screenshots next time).

Below are his Tweets from 2:10 Luther Braxton-2. To find the original full interaction, do a search on Twitter using his handle @Daniel_Knauf followed by keywords from the Tweets below. A number of the early Tweets are comments on the episode action. You can see Knauf’s comic book work at play.
Here are my takeaways:

🔴 Passion & Passivity: Four Films

🔴 Passion & Passivity

Jan 18, 2015

Crash, directed by David Cronenberg (1996).
sex, lies and videotape, directed by Steven Soderbergh (1990).
Bad influence, directed by Curtis Hanson (1990).
Secretary, directed by David Shainberg (2002).

I’ve been watching some James Spader films from the 1980s and 1990s (to fill the time until The Blacklist starts up again). My response has not been what I expected, especially to Crash, ‘sex, lies & videotape’ and also, Bad Influence and Secretary. This group seems to have a certain coherence, thematically. In all of these, I would say James Spader plays an innocent, even a sexual innocent. I am not saying he is sexually naive, but rather is caught up in situations in which sexuality is an externalized, even emasculating force with which he is trying to cope. In both Crash & sex, lies & videotape, he struggles with impotence; also in both of these, he is just gorgeous, almost feminized at times. He is, in both, more the subject of seduction than its perpetrator. In key scenes in each the camera lingers on his wavy blonde hair and handsome face.

🔴 Fathomless Eyes: Neurobiology of the Gaze

“Love pierces the heart through the gaze of the eyes”

I can’t stop looking at James Spader’s face. I’ve noticed I am not alone in this… It’s as though there were 1000 masks, each one capturing *perfectly* an emotion you didn’t even know existed but that you instantly recognize, and he moves flawlessly from one to the next, sometimes donning several in a second. There must be a name for what he does – micro-acting? I think I saw “close camera acting” somewhere. Anyway, he has nailed it. I am riveted.

2:6 Mombasa: Why the little dancer can’t be Liz (10/30/2014)

I looked up Reddington’s birthday on the on-screen display of the female security guard in the very first scene of the pilot: Feb 7, 1960, same as James Spader (enhanced screenshot: http://bit.ly/1zkNgXZ ). If he “graduated at 24 from the Naval Academy,” that would have been in the spring of 1984 (simple date arithmetic). My husband was on the Honor Committee at West Point and every single time cadets went off base, when they came back they had to sign a statement saying they were “unmarried, … and have no incurred obligations of parenthood” http://1.usa.gov/105GExy. If that signed statement was found to be false, they could be kicked out.
